I met Debbie States and Mike Mabey through my Arizona friends Judy and Roy Schumacher. When I first announced my trip, Debbie was kind enough to invite me to come visit them when I got to Atlanta, GA. Since we only had one night together these fellow music loving, road trip warriors wanted to make sure I had an authentic Atlanta experience. So they took me to Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Okay, so I know what you are thinking. A Tea Room for dinner? It’s pretty hard to make a meal out of crumpets - whatever those are. But then they explained that back in the day women were discouraged from opening restaurants in Atlanta, but the workaround was that they could open Tea Room. And Mary Mac’s Tea Room had become widely known for it’s great Southern fare. Not one to miss out on local cuisine, I ordered Ribs, Macaroni and Cheese, and a personal favorite treat from my youth, Fried Green Tomatoes (just like in the movie, but without the sketchy “special sauce”). And. It. Was. AMAZING! So I need to give a special thanks to Debbie and Mike for hosting me and giving me a delicious serving of true Southern hospitality.
