I saw this road sign as I drove through Flagstaff, AZ on my way back home to Phoenix, AZ. I figured it would be the perfect way to end the Trip Commentary portion of my book Life Is A Highway. After all, Route 66 is synonymous with great road trips and is often called "The Mother Road" and "The Main Street Of America". It's a road so cool that it had a TV show based on two guys traveling it and a rock song written about it called (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66. And finally, it's the road I started this trip on when I was standin' on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. As I look at this sign, it conjures up a lot of feelings. It makes me wistfully long for the simpler times of my youth when I could stick out my thumb and hitchhike down it. It makes me happy remembering the many times I followed it to chase a dream, fall in love, discover America and let my spirit - and long hair - fly free. Lastly, it excites me because it reminds me that highways like this are still out there. And if we are really, really lucky, all we have to do is flip a coin to see which direction we should take.
