Two years ago I visited Traverse City, MI on my America The Beautiful trip to all 48 contiguous states. Since I hadn't been there in over 40 years, I was blown away on how beautifully that city in my home state had matured. So this year I made it a point to see some of the other great places in northern Michigan that I'd heard so much about. And my first stop on that trek was Charlevoix (pronounced SHAR-la-voy). To put it simply Charlevoix is a delight to the senses. Located on the massive, brilliant blue Lake Michigan, it has a white sand beach that beacons visitors. The impressive drawbridge opens up on the half hour to allow the sailboats and yachts passage. The streets are ablaze with colorful flowers everywhere. And the seamless blend of shops, eateries, music, arts, scenery and architecture all serve as an example of what wonders can happen when business, culture and natural beauty all come together.
