My Dad was a huge Detroit Tigers fan. And I grew up playing sandlot baseball in Michigan. So when my buddy, Glen Geordt said the Field Of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, Iowa was close by, I knew I just had to go see it.
If you have never seen the movie Field Of Dreams, stop reading and go watch it now. Go ahead. I'll wait. I want you to have that incredible experience. And if you have seen it then what I say about it here should ring true. The baseball diamond, house and cornfield look exactly like they did in the movie. And true to the words immortalized in the speech by James Earl Jones called "People will come", people STILL come from all over the world to for all the reasons he states. If they are really lucky, they get to be in a little pick up game so they can tell their children and grand children that they once played there. And that's exactly what happened to me. My Iowa tour guides, Glen and Earl Geordt had thought ahead and brought along a bat, some gloves and a bucket of baseballs. Within minutes of stepping on the field we were playing catch where a man got a second chance to play catch with his Dad. A few minutes after that we asked perfect strangers, Billie Juul and Chris Lindsey if they wanted to play a little ball. And shortly thereafter those strangers became team mates lining up for a commemorative photo taken by Carol Juul. Eventually it came time to break the spell of what we just experienced together and go our separate ways. But as we were all walking away, I couldn't resist asking this one question... "Hey guys. Is this heaven?". And at the exact same time they turned and responded... "No. This is Iowa." Cover Contents Books Home Hire Stories Comments are closed.
