It would be easy to think that Iowa is just about farms because there are so many of them. But if you take the time to explore - and have a great tour guide like I did in Glen Geordt - you quickly realize how culturally diverse The Hawkeye State truly is. Here's just a few examples. The Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in the small town of Dyersville, Iowa (population @ 4000) looks like a magnificently beautiful church you would visit in Rome or Florence, Italy. It was built in 1862 and is open for tours and holds masses daily. Breitbathe's Country Dining in Balltown, Iowa (population @ 100) is Iowa's oldest bar and restaurant. It also has The Brietbachs Bieer Goardan which is an actual garden where you can drink beer (for those of you who always wondered what the phrase "Beer Garden" meant). And the Park Farm Winery in Bankston, Iowa (population @ 25) is in a setting that is just drop dead beautiful. It's like going to Napa, CA, but with no traffic or wine snobs yelling "I am NOT drinking Merlot!" (awesome line - cleaned up a little - from the incredible movie "Sideways"). So if you are looking for something unique, go discover the hidden treasures of Iowa. I am confident that you will be pleasantly surprised by the faces, spaces and places.
