A few years ago I spent time in Iowa while working as a writer, photographer and marketing consultant for a Doctor who was launching a nutraceutical company. I was so impressed by the people and the state, I was looking forward to coming back someday. Well, as good luck would have it, a fellow road trip warrior buddy, Glen Goerdt just happened to be visiting his home state as I was driving back to Arizona. So he invited me to come visit and meet his brothers, Russell, Leon and Earl there. And in keeping with my previous experiences, the guys graciously went out of their way to make sure I got a sweet taste of Iowan hospitality.
The best way to illustrate how different Iowa is than other places was our stop to buy Kehrli Sweet Corn so Leon could cook it up for dinner. Chad and Karen Kehrli grow the corn and have locations in Manchester, Strawberry Point, Edgewood, Winthrop, Coggon and Independence, Iowa. And the way they sell it to consumers is by the honor system. Yep. You heard that right. You simply drive up to a farm, pick out the number of ears you want and deposit the money in a box. Between the delicious taste of the corn, the integrity of the growers and buyers, and the warm welcome giving by the residents, I can only describe my overall impression of the state in these words... Iowa. How sweet it is. Cover Contents Books Home Hire Stories Comments are closed.
