Pet Pals
This page is dedicated to the wonderful animals I have been blessed to meet. Some stories are about the Pet Pals I have cared for as a Pet Sitter. Some are of animals that my friends and family love and adore. And others are the beautiful creatures I've been fortunate to meet on the road Les traveled.
Pet Pals: Bella, Frankie, Winifred And Lucy.
These are four more wonderful Pet Pals I got to spend time with on my Take Me Home. Country Roads trip. Bella (TL) is a Pomsky, which is a Pomeranian Husky mix. My gracious host describes her as smart, warm and sassy. Frankie (TR) is thoughtful Tabby I occasionally pet sit for a fellow road warrior in Michigan. You can see the intelligence in those big beautiful eyes. Another adventurous friend introduced me to Winifred (BL), who is a very loving Pancake Patch Torti and to her housemate Lucy (BR), who is an affectionate 13 year old Tuxedo.
Pet Pals: Buddy.
I photographed Buddy in Michigan on my Take Me Home. Country Road 2024ish road trip, Buddy is a Gordon Setter who is an AKC Champion. To say that this handsome, super smart dynamo has a lot of energy is a vast understatement. Just getting him to pause a few seconds for this photo was literally a dog gone challenge. :-)
Pet Pals: Lucy.
I met Lucy in Grand Junction, Colorado on my Living In America road trip. As far as her human parents can figure out, this intelligent, playful pup is a "Schnoodle", which is a mix of Schnauzer and Poodle. One of her favorite activities is going to the "bark park".
Pet Pals: Proud Llama.
I saw this magnificent creature in Carbondale, CO on my Living In America road trip. I gave it the nickname of "Proud Llama" because despite it's unique haircut, it kept its head held high.
Pet Pals: Ariel, Mia, Kiki and Koko.
I got a chance to spend time with Ariel (top left), Mia (top right), Kiki (bottom left) and Koko (bottom right) in Michigan on my Living In America road trip. I asked them all if I could take their portraits to show off their good looks and unique personalities and they all responded, "Yes, as long as there are treats afterwards as a reward".
Pet Pals: Milo.
I met Milo in Michigan on my Living In America road trip. He has a sad story with a happy ending. A family member was driving down the road when they spotted him abandoned, gaunt, dirty and holding an empty food bowl. They stopped and coaxed him into coming with them. They fed him and cleaned him up. Then they called my friend and said they thought he'd be a perfect match for him. Meeting him for the first time, my friend saw the intelligence, charm and energy this 2 year old, mixed breed had - and decided to give him a permanent home. Today Milo gets to go on long walks, epic road trips, snooze next to my friend, and is constantly remined of how much he is loved. So, although he had a rough start, Milo is one lucky dog now. But if you ask my friend, he'll tell you that he is the lucky one.
Pet Pals: Little Pilgrim.
I spotted this adorable miniature horse in the John Wayne Stables in Ashland, Nebraska. I didn't get its actual name, so I'm going with the nickname of "Little Pilgrim" in honor of the great cowboy's famous phrase (video here).
Pet Pals: Keyah.
I met Keyah on the first day of my Living In America road trip. He is a 1year old Munsterlander. His breed is described as being natural retrievers whose abilities are enhanced by intelligence and trainability. And having spent a couple of days with him, I can tell you that his playful nature made him a pure joy to be around.
Pet Pals: Nate and Tamale.
I met Nate (left) and Tamale when visiting a Pagosa Springs, CO ranch on my Living In America road trip. They were both very friendly and absolutely convinced we were going to feed them carrots.
Pet Pals: Feeling A Little Sheepish.
I saw this herd when I first got to Pagosa Springs, CO on my Living In America road trip. I tried to count all of them, but I kept falling asleep. :-)
Pet Pals: The Famous Burros Of Route 66.
One of the early highlights of my Living In America road trip was meeting two of the famous burros of Route 66 in Oatman, Arizona. To see how important these ambassadors are to the town, check out my post here.
Pet Pals: Lizzy.
Lizzy is a 2 year old, Bearded Dragon that belongs to my Grandson. She is probably a darling, but truth be told, I haven't got that close to her yet. And that's because she reminds me of her much bigger relative duking it out in this movie trailer (link here). Special props to the big ape for landing that monster right cross. :-)
Pet Pals: Gus and Mabel.
Gus (left) and Mabel are extended family members, so I see - and sometimes pet sit - them quite often. They are both Black Lab mixes so they have very sweet personalities and are terrific with kids.
Pet Pals: Bailey and Poppie.
I'd rather give all the spotlight to the Pet Pals I meet, but occasionally an owner will take of shot of me interacting with my furry friends that is so cute I can't resist posting. Such is the case when one of my best friends photographed her two girls, Bailey (Shih Tzu, age 9) and Poppie (Yorkie, age 1.5) snuggling in on a good movie night.
Pet Pals: Bruce.
I met this handsome boy when I visited Clovis, CA on my Living In America road trip. His name is Bruce and he's a 5 year old American Bull Terrier. Despite his intense gaze, he is both lovable and charming.
Pet Pals: Norman.
I met Norman when I went to Alameda, CA on my Living In America road trip. I think he is a bull dog and boxer mix. He looks intimidating, but he has a sweet old soul and is absolutely amazing around little ones.
Pet Pals: Remi.
I met Remi when I visited Napa, CA on my Living In America road trip. Remi is a Shiba Inu, which is an ancient Japanese breed dog known for their spirited good-nature. Remi has camera shy dog-mate named Roadie who is a long haired Dachshund.
Pet Pals: Lazurus.
Except for the horses and yaks (stories below), Lazurus is the biggest animal I've ever pet sit for. He is a Great Pyrenees who weighs 130 pounds and stands tall enough to look over a block wall fence. And while his bark sounds like a thunderclap, he is so loving and playful that all he wants to do is lay his big giant head on your lap.
Pet Pals: Flynn and Princess.
Flynn is a high energy, highly intelligent sheep dog who loves to play ball. Princess is a very wise, very affectionate Tabby who prefers to remain in the shadows. Together they rule my friend's house and make sure he never forgets who's boss. :-)
Dogged Determination Pays Off. :-)
Usually when I meet Pets, I bond fairly easily and quickly. But occasionally, I meet some who are determined to make me work for their affection like these two did on my recent road trip. Remy (L) is from Lexington, KY and met me at the door like I was a porch pirate trying to swipe her favorite dog treats. And Sally (R) from Salida, CO was giving me the same kind of vibe. But as these two photos taken by their Pet parents prove, eventually I was able to coax them into a little lap time. And I gotta tell ya, winning them over felt doggone good. :-)
Pet Pals: "2 Dogs, 1 Cat, 2 Horses & 11 Yaks."
When my buddy from Colorado asked me if I'd pet sit for him, I asked him what he had. He said, "2 dogs", and I said, "Good, I love dogs." He said, "One cat." I said, "Great! I really love cats." He said, "2 horses". I said, "Uhhh, let's talk." He explained they were really easy so I shouldn't have a problem. I said, "Cool.". Then he added, "Aaaannd, we have 11 yaks." I just started laughing. I had no clue what a yak was. But I thought about what a fun story it would make, so I said, "Okay, I'm in."
So here's what happened.
The Border Collie puppies Delilah (L) and brother Dusty (R) went to visit another ranch. The male cat, Boots, was a real cuddle love to me, but fearless on the ranch (as you can tell by his gangsta expression above). At one point he wanted to square off with a big screeching eagle and I had to pick him up take him inside. I explained to him that while he was indeed a tough guy, that eagle was like Mike Tyson in his prime, so I wouldn't let him go out until he flew away. He grumbled something like, "I could take him" and then promptly took a cat nap.
The beautiful horses, Dex (L) and Red (R) gave me a run for my money. Literally. I woke up the first morning I was on duty and I couldn't find them. I'm like, "Great. You only had one job to do...". Well, I went jogging around the massive ranch and finally found them at the far end of the property. They were hanging out with some of their horse friends who were on the other side of the fence. I tried to coax them in, but they were just like teenagers who wanted to hang out with the "cool kids" and scoff at the goofy, winded substitute teacher (that would be me, if you are still following along). I called my vacationing buddy and he said that was normal, so I just went with it. I figured that - like teenagers - they'd show up when they were hungry - and they did. And so as long as they were happy and safe, it would be okay.
Lastly, the Yaks. I started telling the story about my pending pet sitting with "2 Dogs, 1 Cat, 2 Horses & 11 Yaks." when I was in Michigan on my on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip. The "Yaks" line always got a laugh. (You might say people were yak-ing it up.) Then one of my friends finally asked, "What are Yaks, Les? Are they cute, furry creatures like Llamas?" (I bet she was thinking Alpacas.) And I said, "I dunno. Let's look it up." It was at that point that Google mocked me by showing me this big horned creature that looked like a massive ticked off buffalo. I said something like, "Uh oh. I am so screwed".
But fortunately, it all worked out. The yaks were pretty easy to care for. They did "false charge" me on occasion. That's when they start like they are going to attack, but back off, just to see if they can scare you. Well, I used to have drunk guys do that to me when I was a bouncer back in the day when I had more muscles than sense, so I just called their bluff and didn't react. Once they saw I wasn't going to scare easily, they said, "Okay, I guess we'll let you hand feed us now". And I said, "I herd that".
So that's one of my stories from the road Les traveled. I hope you got a couple of good yaks out of it. (Sorry. The yak jokes just write themselves.) :-)

PS. Boots still thinks he could've taken that eagle.

Pet Pals: Sally and Maybelle.
I met Sally (L) and Maybelle (R) when I went to see about housesitting an Earthship in Salida, Colorado (that story here) on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip. Sally is a Chiweenie (AKA a Choxie) which is a cross between a Dachshund and Chihuahua. She is 9 years old and was a little aggressive at first, but I eventually won her over with a little charm (and a lot of treats). Maybelle was a luv from the very start. And she's 15 years old but looks good for any age!
Pet Pals: Tilly.
I met Tilly in Pagosa Springs, CO on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip. I asked her human Mom for a description and she told me that Tully is one year old and her birthday is July 13th. Her dog Mom is Red Heeler breed and her dog Dad is a Blue Heeler, so she just tells people Tilly is a Purple Heeler :-) My friend added that Tilly is "the bravest, most cautious girl in all of Colorado!!" And after seeing some of the gorgeous, challenging places those two have hiked, I believe it.
Pet Pals: Barley and Hops.
I stopped to get a cup of coffee at Mirage Trading Company on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip. I was immediately and affectionately greeted by these two beauties, Barley (L) and Hops (R). Curious about their names, I asked their owner about them. He told me that he stopped for a beer in Crestone, CO.. He saw these two adorable free puppies there and he left with the them without ever getting that beer. And I think his story proves a point - loveable puppies are good for whatever ales ya. (Sorry. I couldn't resist doing at least one beer joke.) :-)
Pet Pals: Bjorn And Viggo.
I met Bjorn (L) and Viggo (R) for the first time ever on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip because my Colorado Family just recently added them to their household. Bjorn (which is Norwegian for "bear") is a Great Pyrenees breed. He's not even a year old yet and already weighs 100 pounds, so he's gonna be a huge bear. Viggo The Destroyer got his nickname for his massive paws and claws. However, he is a very gentle and loving cat who is quite content to take a cat nap in your cat lap.
Pet Pals: Koko.
Koko is one of the three cats I regularly pet sit when I am in Michigan. Her furry roommates, Ariel and Kiki are featured below. The reason I have waited until my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip to do post her gorgeous face is that has taken me this long to get her brave enough to pose for me. She is normally very shy, but she finally came around and what a sweety she is.
Pet Pals: Nancy and Enza.
Nancy (L) is new to my Pet Pals page, whereas Enza (R) is a returning favorite. (See her profile below.) I got to spend time with them and their (human) Mom when I was traveling through Nebraska on my 2022 Roll Me Away road trip. As you can tell, they are great posers - and watchdogs, companions and entertainers too.
Pet Pals: Echo and Skylar.
I got to spend time with these two charmers when I visited friends in Lansing, MI. When I asked them (the owners, not the cats :-)) to describe their two female cats they said: Echo (posing beautifully on left) "is a 7 years old Tortie who is playful and loving, but can be a scaredy cat when it comes to thunderstorms". Skylar (on the right - giving me the stink eye) "is a 12 year old Tabby shorthair who has a loud voice, is affectionate at times, but can sometimes be a little grumpy". Note: Here's an updated pic of these two wonderful cats from my Living In America road trip.
Pet Pals: Buddy.
I met Buddy when I was visiting a friend in Kalkaska, Michigan. Not only is he smart, friendly and loving, he is incredibly photogenic.
Pet Pals: Ariel and Kiki.
My second pet sitting gig in Michigan on my Go Your Own Way road trip was for these two girls, Ariel (L) and Kiki (R). They were quiet, demure and loving during the day. And they partied like rock stars at night.
Pet Pals: Sundance, Cassidy, Finn and Myca.
When a lifelong friend sent me an email asking if I could pet sit for Sundance, Cassidy, Finn and Myca in Ortonville, Michigan, I thought it was a purr-fectly good reason to start my Go Your Own Way road trip. I have to admit that it took me a while to win their trust, but eventually they all came around - earning me the nickname from my friends as The Cat Whisperer (or is that Cat Whiskerer)?
Pet Pals: Lucille, Remy and Motley.
This entertaining crew belong to two amazing friends of mine in Lexington, Kentucky and I got to spend time with them on my Go Your Own Way adventure. Lucille (left) is an 8 year old Pittie mix. Remy is a 5 year old Cairn Terrier Chihuahua mix. And Motley (as in Motley Crue) is 3 year old Yorkie.
Pet Pals: Jake (From State Farm).
I met Jake (From State Farm) when I visited some incredible people in Overland Park, Kansas on my Go Your Own Way trip. He is a golden lab and collie mix and has a mellow, loving, fun personality. He got his unusual nickname because he has khaki colored fur and white socks, just like we'd imagine the Jake from the State Farm commercial would wear.
Pet Pals: Mia and Angel.
I got to visit with Mia (top) and Angel when I visited a very gracious host in Utah. Mia is a Russian Blue breed. She is about 14 years old and very independent. Angel is a mixed breed about 4 years old. She is loving, sweet, kind, soft and just loves people. Oh, and both cats answer to "kitty". :-)
Pet Pals: Juliet and Suri.
I got the opportunity to pet sit for Juliet, the gorgeous, friendly cat, and Suri, the intelligent, loving dog right before I left on my Go Your Own Way road trip. They are both fun and playful and make caring for them a joy.
Pet Pals: Bitsy.
With a cute face like this, no wonder pet sitters look forward to the "Dog Days Of Summer". :-) Bitsy is a Biewer Terrier who just loves to cuddle. The American Kennel Club describes her breed as "Intelligent, Devoted and Amusing", which probably explains why they are so doggone pup-ular. :-)
Pet Pals: Luna.
Luna was the last Pet Pal I met on my Every Picture Tells A Story trip. She is a very lovable Husky with two different eye colors. The genetic cause for this striking appearance is heterochromia which is quite common in their breed.
Pet Pals: Goober and Bert.
As I passed through Colorado Springs on my Every Picture Tells A Story odyssey, I had the pleasure of meeting and feeding Goober and Bert. And while I don't know much about them or how they got their unique names, I do know that Bert (right) is 25 years old and still looks and acts half that age in horse years.
Pet Pals: Panther and Nutjob.
I got introduced to Panther (left) and Nutjob (right) when my Every Picture Tells A Story journey took me to Michigan. I'm guessing my nephew, Mike named Panther for his resemblance to his larger jungle counterpart and Nutjob earned his name with some crazy feline antics.
Pet Pals: Myka, Murphy and Jasper.
When my Every Picture Tells A Story road trip took me to Ortonville, Michigan, I got to spend time with my lifelong friend, Debbie and three of her pets Myka (left), Murphy (center) and Jasper (right). Since all three pictured love to cuddle, it made for a fur-iously pleasant stay.
Pet Pals: Enza.
Enza (full name Enza Rose) was named after the incredible dog "Enzo" who is the star of the book and movie, The Art of Racing In The Rain. She is a Blue Heeler which is an Australian Cattle Dog. I got to spend time with her and her host with the most "Mom", Lori near Wahoo, Nebraska on my Every Picture Tells A Story trek.
Pet Pals: Toby And Oakley.
I met Toby (left), a Goldendoodle and Oakley, a Great Bernese Mountain Dog on my Every Picture Tells A Story road trip They are both good sized dogs with excitable puppy energy and tons of personality. They call Castle Rock, Colorado home where they live with their human family, Midi, Jarrod, Macey and Joshua.
Pet Pals: Baxter.
Baxter has appeared on my Pet Pals page before in my "What A Bunch Of Animals!" post below. He is such a delightful, well mannered dog that I was looking forward to seeing him and his "Mom", Becky in Colorado Springs on my Every Picture Tells A Story road trip.
Pet Pals: Boots And Kitten.
Boots (left) and Kitten were the first of the many fine furry friends that greeted me on my Every Picture Tells A Story road trip in 2020. They call Villa Grove, Colorado home and are the loving duo who belong to Danny and Kat.
Pet Pals: Elvis.
When you are pet sitting and think you are going to be able to sneak in a nap, but Mr. Happy Face (real name, Elvis) decides it's time to play instead. :-) Thank you, Thank you very much.
Pet Pals: Kodi.
Kodi (short for Kodiak) is a rescue dog my awesome nephew recently adopted. Kodi is big. Real big. And while we joke that he is the new alarm system for the house, this handsome boy is also very gentle and playful. When I met him, he made sure I understood he would absolutely love to lay down in my lap...
Nope.
Not gonna happen.
Okay, maybe just this one time. :-)

Pet Pals: Ariel.
On a recent trip to Michigan, I was privileged to stay with a lifelong friend who is blessed to have Ariel. Ariel is a gorgeous, affectionate beauty who just loves to cuddle. And that makes me purrrr-fectly happy. :-)
Pet Pals: Jake.
Original Facebook post February 27
I've had the absolute pleasure of pet sitting Jake. He is sweet, lovable, high energy, curious, incredibly strong and super smart. And since I know his family loves him dearly, I am reminded of that verse from the great country song Feed.Jake.
Now I lay me down to sleep
And pray the Lord my soul to keep
If i die before i wake, feed Jake
He's been a good dog
My best friend right through it all
If i die before i wake, feed Jake

Pet Pals: Shiloh and Max.
Original Facebook post January 9
I never knew much about Weimaraners until I started pet sitting Shiloh (female, left) and Max (male, right). They are incredibly smart, loving, protective and funnnnn. And as you can see, they really know how to strike a pose. :-)

Pet Pals: Ricky And Lucy. :-)
Original Facebook post December 21, 2018
Ever since I started pet sitting, I have developed a whole new appreciation and fondness for all animals. So when I met Ricky and Lucy here (not sure which is which, but I do know they are named after the famed comedy couple of I Love Lucy), I started visiting and feeding them treats fairly regularly. And what a joy they have been! They are gentle, fun, and as you can see, not above sticking their tongue out at me. :-) And since I wouldn't be me without posting a reDonkULeslie corny pun, here's my caption, "Hey, does that donkey have a licker license?" :-)

Pet Pals: The Barie Bunch. :-)
Original Facebook post November 14, 2018
I never set out to be a professional pet sitter. It just divinely happened. But now that it has, it has become such a great source of joy and variety. A case in point is my recent adventure watching the Barie Bunch (like the Brady Bunch) comprised of two dogs, three cats, two turtles and some fish. (I know what you are thinking. I'm only one Partridge in a Pair Tree away from being a Christmas song). :-) It was a blast! And I have Michelle Rae Barie from CARE Marketing Services and her husband Jake to thank for it.

Lucy is one of the coolest cats I have ever known. I took this photo of her, but I think it deserves a cool caption, don't you? If so, what are ya waiting for? Cat got your tongue? :-)

Pet Pals: Othello.
Original Facebook posts December 14, 2014 and August 17, 2014.
I got to spend time with this loving, gentle giant when I did some live-in personal training to help a lifelong friend drop 25 pounds. (Stories in links above) Part of our exercise routine was to go on long walks with Othello, who was a Great Pyrraneeze breed that my friend adopted from a Hollywood rescue. While we actually covered a good distance every day, we couldn't get very far without being stopped by people who were impressed by his size, looks and friendliness. And when we told some of the kids that Othello once was the star of the movie, Santa Buddies, their eyes went wide with amazement.

Meeting New Pals Along The Road Les Traveled.
I spotted this cute guy grazing on the grass and asked my buddy to try to get a photo where we were both in frame. Much to my pleasant surprise, this magnificent beast thought it would be much better if we were up close and personal. :-) (link to full story here).
