In my previous post, I talked about how amazing it was to chance upon Steve Heller's Fabulous Furniture in Boiceville, NY. In this post I want to talk about the tremendous scope of Steve's work. Like the name implies, the hand crafted furniture is fabulous and so are all of his other creations. He's got retro rocket ships and robots in the front yard. He has classic cars ablaze with flaming art. And then there's sculptures like the one pictured here. I don't know the name, but judging from the profile I'm guessing she's a Kardashian. :-) At any rate, it was an honor meeting Steve Heller and seeing his mind blowing work. And if you are ever near his place near Woodstock, NY, I hope you get to experience it too.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories Like many people, I thought Woodstock, NY was the home of the greatest rock concert of all time. But I recently learned that the 1969 Woodstock Festival was actually held many miles away when I visited that historic site with my daughter (that story here). What Woodstock is accurately known for is it's enchanting atmosphere, enticing places like the Woodstock Music Shop, and its many delicious eateries like The Mud Club and Oriole 9. And of course, there's lots of art to take us back to a simpler time when the topics of the day were peace and love.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories The village of Jeffersonville, NY has been called "A Small Town Destination For All Seasons" and it is easy to see why. It sits in the scenic foothills of the Catskill Mountains where there are forests, lakes and rivers that offer recreational activities all year round. And the downtown area has a timeless feel and offers an eclectic mix of restaurants, businesses and shopping spots for art, gifts and antiques.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories When I saw this peaceful church in Jeffersonville, NY I thought of one of my favorite songs. The lyrics go: "Take me back. To the place that feels like home. To the people I can depend on. To the faith that's in my bones." If you been blessed to attend a church that makes you feel like that, or if you have not but your heart just needs a little lift today, you can hear the encouraging song in the link below. But take note: When the drums and the choir kick in you're gonna wanna clap. Even if you were raised a stoic Lutheran like me. :-)
Cochren & Co., "Church (Take Me Back)" < link to song Contents Books Home Hire Stories Callicoon, NY is another hidden gem in Upstate New York. In addition to its scenic hillside views, it has lots of shops, restaurants and attractions. Time Warp Records Callicoon is a "vintage vinyl record store, small in size, but giant in well-edited, well-stocked music history." Catskills Provisions Distillery is a craft spirits and artisanal food company with 100% New York raw wildflower honey at the core. Callicoon Depot is the site of the original train station that will soon house the the Callicoon Depot and the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway Visitor Center. And the Callicoon Brewing Company is a stately brewpub that overlooks the Delaware River.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories In addition to the great places mentioned in my previous post about Callicoon, NY, the quaint village also has a pretty downtown area that artfully blends tradition and innovation. And since one of my favorite things to see on my travels is restored movie theaters, I took a special delight in seeing the Callicoon Theater. The Theater was built in 1948 in a "Quonset Hut" style building. It hosts 350 seats set in a historic art deco ambiance that is complimented by modern day digital projection equipment and Dolby surround system.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories As we will see in my next post, Narrowsburg, NY offers a lot for such a small place. But before we get to that, can we just talk about this view from downtown? Isn't this scenery just breathtaking? And aren't you grateful for places like this that can delight your senses, quiet your mind and help restore peace to your soul?
Contents Books Home Hire Stories Narrowsburg, NY is a small hamlet that sits on the Delaware River between the Catskill Mountains and Pocono Mountains. I'm told that two favorite eateries there are Tusten Cup for coffee and breakfast staples and The Heron with it's farm-to-table menu. And in addition to places in town and nearby where you can eat, shop and stay, there's a host of outdoor recreation activities that will encourage you to come out and play.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories When I rounded a curve and saw this groovy giant, I had no idea who he was or that he was in a famous back yard near an even more famous location. Well, I just found out that this tie-dyed, patched-jeaned wearin' former Muffler Man called Hippie Paul Bunyan is standing on Max Yasgur's farm. And Max Yasgur made history when he hosted the 1969 Woodstock Festival on his property (now called The Bethel Woods Center for The Arts).
