If you are feeling a little lovey dove-y, then the Sullivan Catskills Dove Trail is perfect for you. The Dove Trail celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock festival and the historic impact it had on the picturesque area. There are 50 of the dove sculptures perched in towns, villages and noteworthy tourism locations. Each permanently mounted dove is hand-painted by a local artist and inspired by the greatest rock concert in history. For those who love the art of travel, there is a downloadable PDF brochure that has a map and info for all 50 locations (link here).
Contents Books Home Hire Stories I recently discovered a place like no other - Michigan Brewing Works in Williamston, MI. It's history reads like fable. Some guy (his name is Bob) discovers he's really good at brewing beer. He eventually buys a 100-year-old farmhouse on a hill and opens a bar in it. It's so remote there's only way there. The atmosphere feels like you are walking into your favorite Uncle's house, and he's growing garlic in the back, which is good because...no vampires. And one day he'll have his magnificent barn fixed up for dances and weddings. So yeah, you gotta go see it before somebody tries to steal it's soul and authenticity. Because it may not be Pure Michigan (state slogan), but it's real Michigan (and that's a good thing). :-)

Contents Books Home Hire Stories The Dexter, Michigan area was settled in 1824, 13 years before Michigan became a state. And I gotta say it's looking really good for being nearly 200 years old. It sits along the banks of the Huron River and Mill Creek and the downtown area is packed with cool shops and eateries. This beautiful blend of nature and culture makes it an ideal getaway from busy life and the perfect way to experience the charms of small town Michigan.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories In my previous post, I talked about the history and charm of Dexter, Michigan. However, I would be remiss if I didn't highlight it's creative blend of art and nature. Monument Park in the downtown has a tall statue honor cereal magnate C.W. Post. And nearby Mill Creek Park is a big riverside park with a pedestrian path that leads through a lush wetland habitat - complete with a friendly troll.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories The Chelsea Clocktower in downtown Chelsea, MI is a magnificent site to behold. It was built in 1906, stands 135 feet and has seven-foot-wide clock faces on four sides of the octagonal brick tower. It once served as a business office and showroom for the Glazier Stove Works and contained a water tank that held over 30,000 gallons of water for the building's fire sprinklers. Today it serves as a beautiful reminder of how classic architecture literally and figuratively stands the test of time.
Contents Books Home Hire Stories Chelsea, Michigan is perfect for anyone who loves impressive architecture, sumptuous food and a full array of arts. Perhaps the best example of the diverse architecture is the renowned Clarkston Clocktower, the vintage Chelsea Depot and the massive Jiffy Mix building that are all within yards of each other. A stroll along the inviting downtown area reveals eateries like Zou Zou's Cafe & Coffee Bar that are deliciously welcoming. And the art ranges from the lovely Sculpture Walk to Emmy Award winning actor Jeff Daniels', Purple Rose Theatre Company.

Perhaps it was because I grew up in Utica when it was a sleepy little town or perhaps it was because it was a free event, but I wasn't expecting much. But boy was I pleasantly surprised when the local band, The Stumbling Mice started playing at the July 15th Weekend Unwind event. Their eclectic mix of rock and rhythm and blues was simply terrific. So many thanks to the boys in the band - Bob Monteleone on guitar, Joe Sykes on bass, Myles Rutledge on drums and Tom Blower on guitar - for putting on a great show.
